The Cevennes are situated in the Languedoc Roussillon region.
The term Cevennes describes a chain of mountains at low on average altitude which passes through the counties of the Herault (34), Gard (30) and Lozère (48). Mialet is situated at an altitude of 175m.
The environment of the Cevennes
Created in 1970 the Cevennes national park guarantees the protection and respect of a natural environment, of the biosphere and is also the most wooded of the French national parks.
The park allows many excursions and hikking outings where you can see for yourself the protected environment.

The history of the Cevennes
The word Cevennes comes from the Gaul word “Cebenna” which was later transformed into the Latin word “Cevenna” by Jules Cesar. In 1878 the writer traveller Robert Louis Stevenson set about, with his donkey modestine, to travel across the Cevennes and tell the tale in his work “across the Cevennes on a donkey”.
This 230km hike is day known as the “Stevenson walk” and corresponds to the GR70 hikking path.
Between 1702 and 1704-05 the Camisard war took place in the Cevennes. This war lasted 3 years but followers of the reform were oppressed until 1787 the date the “Edit of Versailles” was signed. Only few minutes away from the hotel restaurant, is the house in which the chief Camisard Rolland was born. His birthplace is now the “museum du Desert” and it relives the Huguenot past and history of the Camisards.
For a long time, chestnut trees were the main Cevenol ressource. The chestnut was used in many ways (dried, in soup, grilled) it’s leaves were used as fodder and it’s wood to make furniture and roof structures. Although still present today in the Cevennes, the chesnut tree is much rarer and often has been taken over by the oak or pine tree.
From 1709 the Cevennes turned towards the silk production (at this time an exeptionally hard winter was fatal to numerous chesnut trees and so they were replaced by the mulberry tree and its leaves were used to feed the silk worm. And so the bneeding of silk worms was developed and the fabrication chair (from the extraction of the silk thread from the cocoon to the weaving process) was carried out by hand on the Cevennes silk farms.
The hotel restaurant the Pradinas is one of these former silk farms.
In the nineteenth century the abandon of silk for synthetic material brought about the end of the silk production in the Cevennes and in France. The silk museum in Saint Hippolyte du Fort tells the story of silk in the Cevennes.
Tourism and the culture at the Pradinas in the Cevennes
The setting of the hotel restaurant in Mialet is an ideal place to discover the Cevennes. Surrounded by historic and picturesque villages such as Anduze or Saint-Jean du Gard it is near the main Cevenol cultural and touristic sites (museum du Desert, the museum of the Cevenol valley, the Bambouseraie of Prafrance, the steam train, the caves of trabuc). Equally it’s the starting point for many hikes, strolls or simply pleasant dips in the Gardon River. Here are a few examples of places to visit : Ales, Nîmes, Montpellier, Florac, sites such as the Gard Bridge (Pont du Gard near Remoulins) and the Baux of Provence. Discover the Mediterranean beaches and visit the weather observatory of the Mont Aigual. Wine lovers will find in the Languedoc Roussillon region, under the Sud de France label, a large range of great quality products which gives this region its reputation.
